Lackland AFB FamCamp

Advanced planning allows for many stays at military recreation facilites. They are clean, friendly, affordable (most around $18/day), and secure. This one is at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX.

We'll stay here for a week, before moving on to New Mexico. Visits with grand daughter/great grandson and family, and Deb's cousin are planned, along with San Antonio attractions.

Life is good.

As the sign says... No Swimming in the Lagoon. But don't let that stop you from visiting Big Lagoon. There are plenty of other places to swim on this 650 acre rustic camp setting, including the National Seashore/ICW... East and West Beaches.

Flanked by scrub oak, slash pine, green wetlands and marshes, the campsites are easily accessible along the loop and many are "big rig" friendly, up to 45 ft.

The park offers much to do, including swimming, fishing, hiking (along trails and the raised boardwalk), boating, birding, and much more.

Full facilities, including showers and dump station.

Pricing is reasonable... $6.00 park fee and $20 campsite, with many reduced rate plans. As a combat-wounded vet, I received a Lifetime Free Park pass and paid $10 for the campsite, including hookups.

I do recommend making online reservations, as this park is very popular; however, I did note there were a few no-shows. The gate closes at sunset, however, knowing we were going to arrive late, we called ahead and were provided with the gate code for entry.

One last thing... Big Lagoon is in the Florida Panhandle (Pensacola). Potential summer storms trigger the park being closed, as it was during the recent hurricane/tropical storm Debby. In these instances the online reservations website makes note and prevents making reservations. Check the weather before you plan your trip.

Overall I give Big Lagoon 4 of five stars.
